Facts and History about Kavala Airport
Kavala International Airport (Greek: Kratikós Aeroliménas Kaválas "Mégas Aléxandros") (IATA: KVA, ICAO: LGKV), also known as Alexander the Great Airport, is located in Nestos municipality, 32 kilometers from Kavala, Greece.
Fraport Greece, an association of Fraport and Copelouzos, is developing, managing, and operating the airport under a 40-year modification agreement signed with the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund in December 2015.
In December 2017, Fraport Greece announced a €10 million ($11.8 million) modernization project to upgrade and expand Kavala International Airport to meet the growing needs of domestic and international passengers.
The airport's renovation project, expected to be completed by 2019, will allow it to provide passengers with reliable and safe air transportation services. It is also likely to boost Greece's economy and tourism.
The runway at Kavala Airport is 3,000 meters long and 45 meters wide (05/23). Large aircraft such as the Airbus A330-300, Boeing 757-200, MD-83, Avro RJ-100, and Boeing 767 can land on the asphalt runway. There are 12 aircraft parking spots available.
Direct flights to several European countries are available, as are daily flights to Athens, Greece.
The Kavala International Airport modernization project entailed remodeling and expanding the existing terminal to include modern facilities and amenities.
The project will add 2,029m² to the existing passenger terminal to provide passengers with greater comfort and efficiency.
A cutting-edge baggage handling system with advanced automated screening technology will be installed, and the airport's check-in counters will be increased from eight to ten.
A hold baggage screening (HBS) system will be installed with inline technology. It will be used for automated passenger baggage inspection.
